What an absolutely brilliant idea! It seems that a Spanish town has started posting dog mess back to offending hound owners. How great is that?!

The doggy deposits are sent back to the owners in an official looking box that’s marked ‘Lost Property’.

The idea is the brainchild of councillors in Brunete which lies 20 miles to the west of Madrid. Their operation involved a team of 20 volunteers who patrolled the streets watching for dog owners who failed to scoop the poop. They then struck up a casual conversation with the owner to discover the breed and name of the pooch.

With that information, they can check the registered pet database. The offending poop is then scooped into a box and delivered by courier to the pet’s owner. I mean, come on, it’s genius.

I must admit that, many years ago, I was sick of a neighbour’s dog coming into my garden and leaving deposits on my lawn.

So I started scooping it up into clear plastic bags and taking it back to the owner, stating that, “Your dog left this in my garden. I thought you’d want it back.” It worked for me, too. West Lothian Council - take note.
