SCOTTISH drama Waterloo Road has a new recruit this term and it’s only the beginning for Linlithgow lad Taylor Rhys.
Taylor (22) is playing newcomer Jack McAlister in the new season of the popular BBC1 show which started on Thursday, January 3.
Taylor, whose family stay at Beech Tree on Edinburgh Road, knew he wanted to be an actor from an early age and followed the bright lights to London at 18, where he spent three years at drama college, the Poor School.
After starring in productions at London’s Workhouse Theatre including ‘‘Macbeth’’ and ‘‘Habeus Corpus’’, the youngster had a lucky break when auditions for Waterloo Road came up just after he graduated last summer.
He said: “I got lucky really. I went for an audition and didn’t get it. Then, about a month later, another part came up that I went for. I got the part on the Thursday and was filming by Wednesday, June 13, which was my 22nd birthday!”
Taylor has been working five days a week in Greenock, donning a maroon and yellow tie as sixth year would-be rogue Jack McAlister. The show, originally set in Rochdale, was relocated to a challenging school in the Scottish location last year.
He added: “It’s really good fun. Jack is 17 and is a smart, intelligent boy. He’s very sporty and likes football but he’s pretty arrogant and cocky with the girls and a bit of a trouble maker.”
Taylor has also been put up in his own flat in Greenock by the production company.
He added: “It’s brilliant and really laid back. Everybody is great and we have a lot of fun. There are lots of us the same age living in area, so we can have pizza nights and go for a drink together.”
As for his future acting career, Taylor’s Waterloo contract ends this June, but he’s not worried.
He said: “People say once you’re in TV you can’t get out of it, so I hope that’s the case! I would also like to do theatre as that’s a completely different experience. I’d like to do comedy and I’m still young, so it could be something like ‘The History Boys’. But I’m not thinking too far into the future as I’m just enjoying this.”
Watch Taylor in Waterloo Road on BBC1 on Thursdays from 8-9pm.
