A BID for half-a-million pounds of regeneration cash for Bo'ness will be submitted to the Scottish Government by Falkirk Council.
Members of the policy and resources committee on Tuesday called for £509,000 to enhance Bo'ness streets, tourist signage and two derelict properties.

The council is also bidding for £490,000 to build on the recent Shop Local campaign across the di
strict, including Bo'ness. In total £3million is being sought district-wide.

But the SNP opposition, who claim they had to support the whole bid or risk not getting any cash at all, say some proposed spending targets are 'candyfloss'.

The Scottish Government announced a national £60m Town Centre Regeneration Fund in April, to help town centres through challenging economic times by making strategic improvements.

Today (Friday) is the submission deadline for the capital funding, with decisions due by July 30, and the money must be spent this financial year.

The SNP hope to see a link bridge at the harbour docks included in a future bid, and criticised the short time members had to debate this week's proposals.

David Alexander, SNP group leader and committee member, said: "Technically there's an agreement but if we'd disagreed we would have lost the lot. The council's not actually putting a penny into any of these developments. That's a serious weakness, saying to the government, we don't see these as a priority to fund ourselves."

But Labour committee convener Linda Gow says £185,000 is being put into the Bo'ness scheme, along with Heritage Lottery cash. She added the bridge proposal is already part of the ING project.

Bo'ness councillor John Constable (SNP) said: "It's been bulldozed through at the last minute. It's candyfloss, but we're not going to stop it and say we don't want £3m from the Scottish government."

Councillor Gow added: ''"I think in the time allowed for the bids to be drawn up these are excellent proposals. That's nearly £3m of bids and that's not candyfloss in anybody's language.''

Bo'ness Labour councillor Adrian Mahoney said: "There's already a lot of activity, shops are being repainted and repaired and this will help that. Anything we can do to improve our town centre, our local shops, that keeps money in our local economy and going to local people's pockets, hopefully we'll be successful on that."

Today's Vote

The last budget before the general election is due. How would you help the economy?
I'm happy to pay more income tax to see more investment
I want a wage freeze for all public sector staff
Nothing we can do will help the economy
