ASK Joanne Milligan what she gets when her daughter spends a few hours or an overnight stay with her short break carer and she gives a very honest reply. "My sanity back," she candidly admits.

Tiny Melissa is a five-year-old bundle of energy with complex needs, who although Joanne and husband Eric love her to bits and can't imagine life without her, has stretched them to breaking point.

This week the family, and their respite carer Colette Byrne, speak about the difference having time out makes to their lives.
