A MEMORIAL to Star Trek actor James Doohan is to go on display at Annet House museum in Linlithgow.

Mr Doohan's death in July 2005 sparked a war of words between the Royal Burgh and Aberdeen — as both towns claimed his character Montgomery "Beam Me Up, Scotty" Scott as their own.

In original scripts of the cult sci-fi series, Scotty was said to be born in Linlithgow in the year 2222 and, while his character journeyed where no man had gone before, his parents still lived in leafy Lithgae.

Although Aberdeen tried to get in on the act, the Journal and Gazette contacted Mr Doohan's son Chris in Los Angeles who laid the birthplace claim to rest...his father told him that Scotty's birthplace was Linlithgow on June 28, 2222.

As a result, West Lothian Council hired consultants to investigate ways of tapping into the lucrative Trekkie tourism market.

Now it's been revealed that, after discussions with Mr Doohan's wife Wende and his family, a memorial is to be set up in Annet House museum later this year.

As well as paying tribute to Canadian actor Mr Doohan, his character will also be much in evidence with the council hoping to display his Star Trek costume and a model of the Starship Enterprise being built specifically for the exhibition.
