The Tough Mudder event at Dalkeith Country Park last Sunday took no prisoners but Linlithgow film maker Russell Dalgleish did not shy away from the challenge.

Russell (49) took on the obstacle course with son Scott to raise funds for the Yorkhill Children’s charity in Glasgow.

He said: “We all survived and came in under three hours which was way better than I expected.

“It was one of the most thrilling things I’ve ever done, especially jumping from a platform 30 feet up - really scary.

“The furthest I’ve ever run before was six miles and Tough Mudder was twelve, but when you add in the very difficult underfoot conditions and the truly mental obstacles (nothing can describe jumping into a skip full of icecubes) I’m just amazed I finished.”

“If anyone does this I would urge them to enter as a team as that really helped. “

Russell was in training for months before the event and lost a stone-and-a-half in weight before taking on the challenge, which involved swimming in icy water, crawling through 40m pipes, and running through miles of thick nettles.
