SEVERAL bus services in Falkirk town centre are facing diversions starting today, Monday, January 7 around the junctions of Kerse Lane/Meadow Street and Bellvue Street.

These include the Services 5 and 19 to Bo’ness, and the Service 38 which goes through Linlithgow.

The £135k project will see new traffic lights installed and pedestrian improvements made, including a pedestrian crossing installed for the first time on Kerse Lane (west), Garden Street and Bellvue Street.

Three existing gantries, that previously had increased the junction’s annual maintenance cost, are being removed.

The diversions are expected to impact for around three weeks. As well as changes of departure points for bus passengers, there may also be delays for motorists in the town centre area especially at peak hours.

After the three week period, it is expected that the junction will be controlled by temporary traffic lights for a further three weeks.

Councillor Craig R Martin, environment and community safety convener, said: “Unfortunately the work is necessary to improve the junctions as the equipment is out dated and with the new installations, we can offer a better designed and safer area, especially for pedestrians.

“The work is expected to last for approximately six weeks and we are urging bus passengers and drivers to allow more time for their journeys through the town centre especially around these locations.

“No one likes disruptions such as these but we hope that everyone appreciates the improvements once they are completed and we apologise in advance for the disruption.”

First Bus are also advising passengers on affected services.
