St Michael’s Church is planning a celebration of its spire, the Crown of Thorns, on Sunday, November 23.

Its modern design was highly controversial when it was first constructed in 1964.

But the then minister, the Reverend Dr David Steel, said: “All additions and alterations to the church have been of their period and this is of ours.”

To reflect the change in attitudes over time, the celebration is to be called From Controversy to Icon.

But the team putting together the celebration need some help.

They are looking for people to come forward with memories of the construction, memorabilia, photos, postcards, or anything at all relevant.

If you can help, contact the minister, Rev Dr Stewart Gillan, by emailing stewart@stmichaels-parish.org.uk or by calling in at the church office in Cross House, open Monday to Friday (excluding Tuesday) from 9am till 1pm.

All contributions will be returned by November 14.
