Sailors on both sides of the River Forth have been hankering to shake out the sails and get ‘‘aweigh’’ from it all for a few hours now that the weather has taken a turn for the better.

And, on Saturday, Blackness Boat Club was a hive of activity as 13 members rallied round to get their craft back in the water for the new seasn under the eagle eye of club Commodore Jim Halliday. The first task was to hoist each of the 13 craft high into the air and gently steer them into the water for the first time in several months.

Vice-Commodore John Mackay said: ‘‘ At the moment we have 46 members and of that number, 13 had their boats out of the water for maintenance over the winter. We are looking forward to getting out and visiting other sailing clubs up and down the river as well as competitive sailing.’’
