Bo'ness Belles get into the festive mood

Cinema-goers are in for a Christmas treat this weekend as Bo’ness Belles sing festive favourites before a special film screening at the Hippodrome.

The 1940s American romantic comedy The Shop Around the Corner stars the serious-minded James Stewart and his snooty colleague Margaret Sullavan who run a gift shop together and can barely stand one another. However without realising it, they are also falling in love as each other’s anonymous pen pal.

The Shop Around the Corner is the last in the Hippodrome’s series of British Film Institute ‘LOVE’ movies and everyone attending will be encouraged to post a love letter to a loved one, or even the cinema as part of a competition to win a copy of Love: A BFI Compendium. The letter deemed to be the most romantic will win the prize.

Alison Strauss, arts development officer at Falkirk Community Trust, said: “The Hippodrome is a romantic place. The starry ceiling and the warm wooden embrace of the auditorium are just the thing to warm the cockles, and I’m convinced that many a romance has blossomed in these aisles since the cinema first opened over 100 years ago.

“To tie in with the film theme we’re inviting our audience to write the Hippodrome a love letter, to tell us about their romance with cinema and this lovely building.

“In this age of emails and social media, it makes a lovely change to send and receive a proper letter, and we are all looking forward to reading the letters that come in.

“We’ll be rewarding the best letter with a love-themed prize. And the audience will be rewarded by the beautiful singing of the Bo’ness Belles.”

Jeni Mallace, from Bo’ness Belles, said: “We are delighted to be part of this event and are really looking forward to Saturday’s performance. The Shop Around the Corner is a heart-warming favourite, particularly at this time of year.”

Other Hippodrome highlights in the run up to Christmas include It’s a Wonderful Life on Friday, December 18 at 7.30pm, Sunday, December 20 at 2.30pm and Thursday, December 24 at 11am and 2.30pm. Aardman’s children’s classic Arthur Christmas is showing on Saturday, December 19 at 11am.

Gift vouchers are also available for all Hippodrome screenings including Star Wars, which opens on Sunday, December 27, and more National Theatre Live screened performances in the New Year.

The Shop Around the Corner (cert U) is at the Hippodrome in Bo’ness on Saturday, December 19 and the Bo’ness Belles live performance is at 2pm.

Tickets cost £6.50 or £4.95 for concessions. Pens and paper for the love letters will be provided.
