Young Catriona McKellar will walk to raise funds for research into type one diabetes.

Catriona (9), from Springfield, was diagnosed with the auto-immune condition three years ago and although shocked, mum Hazel, dad Andrew and brother Callum (6), now take it in their stride.

Hazel said: “The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) are great at supporting families and this walk raises funds to improve lives for those with type one diabetes and find a cure.

“A cure may not come within Catriona’s lifetime but progress is made all the time. Even in the past three years, treatment has improved, and she now receives insulin through a pump, rather than having multiple injections.”

Catriona takes 12 blood tests a day to monitor her blood sugar levels.

Hazel added: “Catriona can do everything she did before, but it takes more planning.

“You can’t let it beat you physically or mentally.”

The JDRF ‘Walk to Cure Diabetes’ is on Sunday, October 6, at the Falkirk Wheel.
