police put people on the alert after an elderly man in Torphichen became the latest victim of a bogus caller.
Lothian and Borders police are appealing for information after a 66-year-old man was duped into paying for gutter repairs. The man was at home at Priorscroft, Torphichen, around 1pm on Monday, January 3, when two men called at his door and offered to do the repair work for a fee that he agreed to pay. Around an hour later, one of the men offered to do further repairs to the guttering and again agreed a fee for the job before arranging to visit on Friday and carry out the work.
On the following day, the other man went back to the homeowner and offered to complete the job that day, but requested a sum of cash for materials. After receiving the money, the man left but did not return to carry out the agreed work.
Police now want to speak to anyone who believes they have seen the men in the area, or who remembers seeing a white pick- up where the men were known to be operating.
The first suspect is described as white, 40, 5ft 10ins tall with short brown hair and wearing a brown anorak.
The second suspect is described as white, 5ft 8ins tall with a slight build, light brown hair and wearing a light-coloured anorak.
A police spokesman said: “These men have been able to obtain a three figure sum of cash from the victim, but have failed to carry out all the work, which they had agreed with him.
“Anyone who believes the suspects may also have attended at their door and offered to do some work for them should come forward to assist with our enquiries.
“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of these men or can help us identify the owners of a white pick-up vehicle, which was in the area is also asked to contact police.”
