A RARE yellow peony plant worth £250 has reaped rewards at Gardening Scotland 2012.

Binny Plants from Ecclesmachan won both ‘Best New Plant’ award with the Paeonia ‘Lemon Chiffon’ (above), and ‘Best Floral Exhibit’ with an indoor display called ‘Riverside Retreat’ at the national gardening contest.

Billy Carruthers of Binny Plants, who have been regular exhibitors at Gardening Scotland since it launched in 2000, said: “All of us at the nursery are absolutely delighted to have won these awards.

“Double yellow peonies, especially ones that are true yellow and aren’t tinged with pink, are extremely rare and the price reflects the many years that it has taken since it was bred for there to be enough plants to make it commercially available.”
