A Bo’ness teenager is flying high after learning he has been selected for a sports scholarship in Indiana.
Ryan Shanks, (18), who lives in Bo’ness with his mum and dad, Suzannah and Neil, jets out of the country at the end of the month to enrol with Ancilla Chargers, Indiana, on a full scholarship basis.
The sporty youngster has always had a love of football having played for St Mary’s Primary and then St Mungo’s High School before playing for juvenile team Salvesen and Dunipace Juniors under 19’s.
It was with the latter that he was spotted by talent scouts from Recruitment USA who saw his potential, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Shanks has been a member of the Scottish Amateur Football Association and was named the coaches’ and parents’ player of the year from 2010-2013 in the Salvesen League. During the 2012-2013 season, he was also the top goal scorer.
Most recently, Ryan, a member of the Dunipace Thistle AFC helped his team win both the league cup and title.
When asked why he chose Ancilla Ryan responded: “After talking to the coach and hearing about campus life and the soccer program, I knew it was the right choice for me.”
“Ryan is a versatile defender who can use both feet. He will suit our style of play with his composure on the ball and his ability to bring it out the back,” commented Charger coach Adam Hall.
