Springfield Primary School, Linlithgow is the first school in West Lothian to be awarded Cycle Friendly School status in recognition of their efforts to support and encourage cycling to school.

Keith Irving from Cycling Scotland visited the school to present the staff and pupils with the prestigious award today (Thursday 7th May 2015).

The nationally recognised Cycle Friendly School Award rewards primary and secondary schools, teachers and volunteers committed to increasing cycling at school.

The award has been developed by Cycling Scotland with the aim of promoting cycling to school as a pleasant, healthy and economical travel choice. Cycling Scotland offers guidance on travel planning and providing cycling facilities and helps to create a culture of cycling within the school community.

To achieve the award, schools must show commitment to cycling by providing facilities such as bicycle parking, changing facilities and Bikeability Scotland cycle training.

Springfield Primary School demonstrated this by creating an up-to-date travel plan, setting targets to achieve by the end of June and offering Bikeability Scotland training to pupils, giving them the opportunity to cycle more safely to school using safe routes and roads in the wider community. Additionally, the school entered the Big Pedal 2015 which saw over 20% of the school and nursery role to cycle or scoot to school over a 3 week period.

Ewan Logan, Class Teacher, said: “At Springfield Primary School, we were delighted to receive the news of our Cycle Friendly School Award. We have continued working hard this academic year to increase the number of children cycling and scooting safely to school. Encouraging more of our pupils to do so will reduce pollution and congestion in the local area, improve our children’s safety and promote a healthier, more active lifestyle.”

Keith Irving said, “Cycling Scotland’s Cycle Friendly School Award recognises the efforts made by our primary schools to make cycling a safe, easy and enjoyable everyday travel choice. Being from Linlithgow myself, I’m especially proud to present Springfield Primary School with their Cycle Friendly School award in recognition of the hard work they have put in to make this happen.”
