FIVE young teenage volleyball stars from Queensferry and Kirkliston made their mark when they recently competed for the national side in a championship in Malta.

The girls, l-r, Becky Arthur, Katie Samson, Sophie Hunter, Gemma Ramsay and Katie Shaw, all aged 17, are fifth year pupils at Queensferry High School while 15-year-old Katie Shaw is at Mary Erskine’s in Edinburgh.

They all play for City of Edinburgh volleyball squads and were called up to compete for the Scottish under 18 side in the European C Championships in Cospicua in Malta. They helped the national side beat Northern Ireland and Malta before losing out to favourites Cyprus. Sophie, who has also played for the Scottish senior side, won the tournament’s best server award.

Following their success, the Scottish team now qualify for the finals to be staged in Cyprus over the Easter weekend. *Despite competing for the national side, the girls have to subsidise the majority of their own travel arrangements and accommodation. If any business or individual would like to offer sponsorship to assist the teenagers for the trip they should contact Fiona Arthur on 07850605351. Picture by Gordon McBrearty
