SHOPPERS in the Falkirk Council area are being alerted to the potential dangers of laser pointers.

Trading standards removed devices on sale at a Grangemouth shop, with five times the permitted power output, that could result in serious eye damage if exposed to them for any length of time.

An investigation is on-going to try to track down the supply chain and manufacturer, to ensure no further similar pointers are sold across the UK.

Environment and community safety convener, Councillor Craig R Martin said while laser pointers were not illegal, many exceeded the permitted power output, and retailers could be unaware they were selling sub-standard products.

He encouraged retailers – or the public – to contact trading standards as soon as possible, before any injuries occurred.
