A special pilot project is launching in Linlithgow linking local pupils with top sports clubs.
Kicking it all off is a golf pilot project between top golfer Stephen Gallacher and Linlithgow Primary P7 pupils.
Linlithgow PE teacher and project mastermind Lesley Malone said: “Linlithgow is an exceptional area for having successful sports clubs - there is every sport you could wish to do, and parents and volunteers are very supportive.
“Linking up with them through the school curriculum means that we can use these club facilities and also work with experts in their field. It creates opportunities for kids and it’s a lot of fun.”
The pilot project is being run at Linlithgow Primary, but if successful, it is hoped that all local primary schools could get involved.
Lesley added: “In the school curriculum we can get a 10 week block of PE that we can use to link with these clubs.
“There is a sport for everybody, and this is a way of giving kids the chance to experience a new sport and discover new talents. It’s also great in this financial climate as some sports, such as golf, may not be available to kids due to cost.”
The kids are really enjoying the experience with some saying it is “loads of fun”, “the best day of my life” and others delighted they have found a sport they can share with their parents.
As well as working with Stephen Gallacher and Kingsfield Golf Club, Lesley is working on similar link ups in shinty, fencing, rugby, cricket, kayaking and netball, across different primary school classes.
