A NEW radio station is set to be launched in Queensferry within weeks.

The station — Queensferry Radio — will broadcast online at http//myqfr.com and will be available 24 hours a day.

The brainchild of 21-year-old local man Andy Malarky, a freelance broadcaster, he aims to officially launch the station, which he has been trialling for weeks, on March 3.

Having worked with Garrison FM, the British Army’s radio station, and Leith FM, Andy believes a town the size of Queensferry should have its own station and his aim is to fill the programme schedule with music, local news, events and sport.

While Queensferry once had its own radio station, Jubilee FM, it only broadcast during Ferry Fair Week. The High School also runs its own online station Radio Gaga. mainly aimed at pupils.

The former Queensferry High School pupil cut his teeth in broadcasting with Jubilee FM when it was based within the school. This led to him studying media technology at college and the move into radio broadcasting.

The new station has been up and running online now for over a month and has received good feedback from the local community through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter where listeners can put in requests.

Andy has also enrolled friends Neil McKenzie and Greg Campbell to assist with programming but is still on the lookout for more help in any capacity. He said: “We only broadcast live at certain times, ideally we would like to have our whole schedule filled with live programmes.”

Broadcasting his daily programme from his house between 4pm and 7pm, Andy says the only equipment you need is a computer and a microphone attachment.
