Bells back in Linlithgow

AFTER two months of repair, St Michael's bells are back in the belfry ready to mark another few centuries on the job.

Santo Michael Archangelo and Meg Duncan, both re-cast in the 16th century, were the two bells returned from John Taylor and Company, Loughborough and rehung this week. The bell-founders will now refurbish the largest bell – Alma Maria – in situ, as it proved too big to be removed from the bell tower. The last time the bells were repaired was 1872 and over the past 140 years, services, weddings and the Marches have taken their toll, with the metal becoming thinner as it was struck repeatedly.

Staff at St Michael's are now appealing for help with the 10,000 repair bill, currently financed by reserve funds that need to be paid back.
