STREETS in Queensferry are set to get brighter in the weeks ahead thanks to new lighting.
Edinburgh City Council is set to undertake a £70,000 improvement programme to upgrade street lighting in the Rosebery Avenue, Rosebery Court, Whitehead Grove and the Ashburnham Road areas of the town.
The old amber-coloured sodium lights will be replaced with white lights, similar to those already in operation across other areas of the town.
The works are set to start on Monday, January 28, and are scheduled to last three weeks.
New positions for the street light columns have been marked out on the pavements in these streets, and some may differ from existing ones. Once the new lighting scheme has been switched on, the old lights will be removed.
News of the upgrade was welcomed by one Rosebery Avenue resident this week. Although he declined to be identified, he said: “It’s about time as the lights in this area are very poor.
‘‘There are areas of the street where there is no lighting at all and it is dangerous for pedestrians, especially if motorists cannot see them. I hope the new lights will make the area safer for everyone.”
A city council spokesman said this week: “We aim to make every effort to minimise disruption and noise but unfortunately some is unavoidable during road works.
‘‘To allow for the safe execution of works, a temporary regulation order has been raised and parking restrictions will apply. The dates and times will be signposted.
‘‘Please note that any vehicles which ignore these parking restrictions will be removed from the location of the works.”
Residents in the affected street will be notified of the impending works through a maildrop in the coming days, and they will be asked to complete a customer questionnaire on completion of the works.
Councillor Norman Work, who has campaigned vigorously for better street lighting across Queensferry said: “This upgrade is part of the city council’s capital programme for 2012/13.
‘‘Back in November, I also called for additional money to be released for improved street lighting on The Loan and Hopetoun Road. These works to upgrade these lights will be carried during 2013/14.
‘‘There are still streets in Queensferry that need lights upgraded, namely Station Road, Dundas Avenue and South Scotstoun.
‘‘Be assured I will continue to campaign for cash to be set aside for improved street lighting in Queensferry in the council’s budget.”
