Clampdown on TV cheats in West Lothian

MORE than 80 people in Linlithgow have been caught watching TV without a licence in the last year.

Figures revealed by TV Licensing this week show that more than 2800 people were caught evading licence fees throughout West Lothian during 2012.

A colour TV Licence currently costs £145.50 and is required by anyone watching or recording TV programmes as they are shown on TV, whether they are using a TV set, computer, or any other equipment.

While the average evasion rate remains at a low of just over five per cent, the figure for West Lothian is more than double residents living in Midlothian and trebles that of East Lothian.

Fergus Reid, TV Licensing Scotland spokesperson, said: “The data released shows evasion remains at historically low levels of approximately five per cent, with the overwhelming majority of people ensuring they are correctly licensed. In order to be fair to the law-abiding majority who do pay for their licence, we’ll continue to pursue the small minority of people do not pay. If people decide to watch TV without being properly licensed, they risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1000.”

Yvonne Gallacher, chief executive of Money Advice Scotland  commented: “We urge members of the public to seek money advice at the earliest stage, to avoid prosecution.’’
