Community groups toast cash bonus

promoting tourism and refurbishment of a theatre has attracted the largest slice of Coalfields Regeneration Trust cash allocated to Bo’ness.
A range of Bo’ness projects will share the £50,000 funding package, following community consultation in which the Bo’ness residents aired their views on what should be priority projects for the town.
Bo’net the Bo’ness Networking Group, which now includes 32 local organisations, has been allocated £10,000 to promote the town as a tourism destination and the Barony Players received £10,000 funding for a refurbishment programme at their Borrowstoun Road theatre.
Maria Ford, secretary of Bo’net, said: “Bo’net will use its award to attract visitors to Bo’ness through a publicity campaign and possibly a website.
‘‘Our problem is getting visitors to come to Bo’ness in the first place.
‘‘Once they have been here they love the place and keep coming back, so encouraging that first visit is our big challenge.”
Bo’ness First Responders received almost £2000 to fund life-saving CPR equipment.
On the cultural front, the awards struck the right note with the Forth Bridges Accordion Band with funding of £8000 for new instruments, and Kinneil Band receiving £3500 for refurbishment work at the band hall on Linlithgow Road.
Bo’ness Playaway Club received £2300, and the Windmill Playgroup was awarded £2000.
There was also good news for Bo’ness United fans whose charitable trust, Newton Park Association, received £5000 to help take the ground into their ownership and there was joy, too, for members of the Apostolic Church who received almost £2000 for repairs to their roof.
Completing the funding list is a grant of £2000 for Sanctus Media to produce a video on the Bo’ness potteries, once a major industry in the area, and £3000 for Blackness Community Council for local information display panels.
Madelene Hunt, convener of the steering group, said: “We were delighted with the response to our various surveys and the fact that we had such a wide range of projects to choose from.
‘‘This funding means that we can get the most popular projects up and running and hopefully create momentum for other funding initiatives.”
Nicky Wilson, Scottish trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, said: “Bo’ness and Blackness have come up with a rich mix of projects which will make the area a better place to work, live and visit in the future.”
