Hopetoun House's fair to remember

THE annual Summer Fair at Hopetoun House was another fantastic event — despite a fairly damp start!

Many hardy folk arrived as the gates opened in the rain in the morning, and were rewarded with fantastic sunshine by early afternoon.

The joy of Hopetoun's Summer Fair is that there really is something for everyone. For music fans there was a wonderful spread of classical music, rock, jazz and big band.

The main arena had a terrier racing display, followed by a side arena with a community dog show, with prizes for the dog with the waggiest tail, and a dog and owner look-a-like contests, as well as the more usual classes.

The main arena also hosted a stunning mountain bike stunt team who had the crowd gasping as they 'flew' their bikes over obstacles, climbing frames and cars. This was followed by a more sedate falconry display.

There was also ample opportunity to buy craft items and fine food. Other activities included a ride on a mini steam train, delving into Deep Sea World's tank to get to know crabs and starfish, face-painting, puppet shows and a bucking bronco.

Piers de Salis, general manager at Hopetoun House, said: "Though the weather wasn't kind to start with, a great day was had by all in the end. We are already making plans for adding to the attractions at next year's fair."

*The next major events at Hopetoun will see the Chapterhouse Theatre Company perform "Sense and Sensibility" on Sunday, August 9 and "Cinderella" on Sunday, August 23. Tickets for the performances are available from Hopetoun House on 0131 331 2451.
