Island dream attracts hundreds
Hundreds of people have applied to become the manager of Inchcolm Island in the middle of the Forth.
A total of 623 people applied to Historic Scotland to become the monument manager on the small island, a short sail from Queensferry. And applications have come in from people from as far away as South Africa and America, who all want to live in the two-bedroom cottage for eight months.
After featuring the job, Historic Scotland was swamped with people wanting to apply for the £20,373 role.
A spokeswoman for Historic Scotland said: “Applications have been flooding in. There has been a remarkable response. Perhaps it’s something to do with the current economic climate - people wanting to escape the rat race.”
She said applicants had been attracted by the pace of life on the island, which has no shops apart from an Historic Scotland gift shop.
The cottage is equipped with a shower, washing machine and cooking facilities, and there is water and electricity but drinking water has to be brought over from the mainland. As a result of the “limited services”, those living on the island do not pay rent.
The spokeswoman said: “The manager also needs to bring food across and plan meals. There is also limited internet connection. A TV is provided although the passing boats can occasionally affect reception.
“The main thing about living on the island is that it offers an adventure and the chance to experience new things. You have the whole island to yourself in the evenings, enjoy beautiful views and the stunning wildlife.”
