KINNEIL Primary School in Bo’ness hit the back of the net on Wednesday, scoring a special visit from Manchester United and Scotland midfield maestro Darren Fletcher.

Darren, who has made 312 appearances for United in the Premier League, Champions League and prestigious cup contests, winning medals in each, was put through his paces at a special question and answer session with Kinneil’s footballers.

The 29-year-old, who has also worn the Scotland captain’s armband and scored five goals for his country, was delighted to field questions from the Bo’ness girls and boys, as well as signing autographs and having photos taken.

Darren has been good friends with Scott Gibson, coach of Kinneil’s boys teams, ever since the ex-Newcastle talent scout came close to signing him for the Magpies as a teen.

In the event, a home visit by Sir Alex Ferguson led to the United youth player staying at Old Trafford, and Darren hasn’t looked back since.

Currently between operations for a chronic bowel condition, he hopes to be pulling back on his football jersey by the start of next season.

The down-to-earth dad was in his element chatting to the pupils, telling them he didn’t see himself as being famous.

He said: “It’s been brilliant. I loved meeting the children - the enthusiasm they showed, and the questions were fantastic and really well thought out. I was very impressed.”

Delighted at Darren’s visit, coach Scott said it was something the kids would remember. Leoni Temperley (9) said: “I’ve enjoyed it lots. The best part was getting his autograph!”

“It feels cool,” said Kai Morrison (10), on meeting a professional footballer.

A ball signed by Darren will be raffled for school funds. In another great result for Kinneil’s footballers, Beatson’s Building Supplies presented a £250 cheque.
