Linlithgow could net £160,000 a year if given thumbs up

a LINLITHGOW business scheme could create up to £160,000 of investment a year for the town if it gets the green light.
This week, West Lothian Council pledged to support plans to set up a Linlithgow Business Improvement District (BID), with £80,000 set aside to match what is collected by local businesses each year.
Cathy Muldoon, executive councillor for transport and development, said: “We’re pleased to support local businesses who are keen to see extra investment in Linlithgow.
‘‘Despite the tough economic times, we have allocated up to £80,000 per year of match funding to the proposed Linlithgow BID when the council’s budgets were set recently. With potentially £160,000 of investments each year, it’s a huge opportunity for businesses to get involved and play a major role in regenerating Linlithgow.”
For Linlithgow to become a BID, at least 50 per cent of local businesses would need to vote in favour of the scheme, they would then agree on a levy that would be collected on top of their rates payments, and the council would match the funds collected by the businesses. The money could then be used for local projects, such as shop improvements.
The first meeting of the proposed Linlithgow Business Improvement District (BID) steering group took place last week. Local business people were joined by Councillor Tom Conn and BID coordinator Stewart Ness.
Successful BIDs schemes are already running in a number of nearby areas, including South Queensferry and Bathgate.
