ONE primary pupil is a rising star in the literary world after taking a Linlithgow-wide trophy for her award winning essay.

Tabitha Cargill (11) is a pupil at Springfield Primary and she was set the challenge along with the rest of her age group across all local primaries to write an essay on their ‘Role Model’. The contest is set annually by the Rotary Club of Linlithgow Grange who award the Jim Clark Memorial Trophy for the best piece of writing.

Tabitha came out top with her essay about Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton, writing about how she set her goals and didn’t give up, and the charity work she is involved in. In 2010 she kayaked over 2,000 miles along the Amazon River, and in 2012 she finished a 500 mile trek to the South Pole, both for Sport Relief.

P7 teacher Elizabeth McMahon said: “It was a really interesting essay and a really lovely piece of work.

“She had absolutely no guidance - it was her choice what she wrote.

“We are so delighted to have the winner in our school this year. Tabitha is really quite a modest person and would never look for that kind of attention, which makes it extra special for her.”

As well as the trophy, Tabitha was given a £200 cheque for her school, and will have a say where it is spent.
