MP welcomes news of speedy broadband

The City of Edinburgh Council is set to receive £10.7 million from the UK Government to see the capital become a “super-connected city” after it was chosen as one of 10 cities across the UK to share a £114 million broadband pot.
The cash boost will aim to ensure that residents living in rural Edinburgh West receive the same broadband speeds as those in the city centre.
Edinburgh West MP Mike Crockart said this week: “This is great news for the capital, but it is particularly good news for my constituents who live in the rural parts of Edinburgh West.
“I have been campaigning for the exchange at Newbridge to be upgraded, but until now its future has been uncertain.
“The fact that the UK Government has awarded the capital more than it requested means that Edinburgh West will see the upgrades it needs. By 2014/15 residents and businesses in Queensferry, Kirkliston, Ratho, Ratho Station, Dalmeny and will see real improvements to their service and will, finally, have broadband fit for the 21st century.
“In spite of the fact that the Scottish Government has £280 million available to use on digital infrastructure it has refused to allocate any funding to upgrades in the capital; abandoning my constituents and ignoring the calls of the local SNP MSP.
“Thankfully the City of Edinburgh Council has managed to secure funding from the UK Government to make ‘better broadband’ a reality for those living in the rural west of the city.”
