New construction phase forges ahead at Echline

CONSTRUCTION work is shaping up with the creation of the Queensferry Junction of the Forth Replacement Crossing project.
The junction is situated west of Echline Corner and will comprise a large roundabout with signals which will allow traffic access to and from the new crossing and the A904.
Mechanical diggers have been in action since the turn of the year to remove tonnes of earth and rock from a field close to the A904 in preparation for the new motorway which will be created to link the Forth Crossing with the existing A90 at Scotstoun.
The motorway at Echline will be built some nine metres below the existing ground level to help reduce the potential effect of noise and visual intrusion.
Around 200,000 cubic metres of topsoil, clay and rock will be excavated from this location and deposited elsewhere along the route on the southern edge of the town, mostly for noise-reducing bunds.
As reported two weeks ago, roadworks at Junction 1a at Kirkliston are ahead of schedule and this led to the opening of the M9 Spur/Westbound M9 link prior to the festive break.
The completion of one phase of the works also led to the removal of the 40mph traffic management system.
It is believed the final phase of works, the link from the eastbound M9 to the M9 Spur will be completed within weeks and an offical opening is planned for the start of February.
On completion of Junction 1a the works compound on the outskirts of Kirkliston will be removed.
The new M9 link is aimed to deter HGV drivers from travelling along the A904 through Newton and on to the Old Philpstoun M9 slip.
Meanwhile the new Contact and Education Centre, which has been created at the Forth Road Bridge Administration block car park at Ferrymuir Gait opened this week.
Representatives for the Forth Replacement Crossing team will be based there to speak to members of the public if they have concerns. The building will also house Traffic Scotland, who will relocate their head office from Glasgow later this year.
