LONDON 2012 might be another 18 months away, but already Olympic fever is sweeping Bo’ness Academy thanks to an international education project.

Aimed at building ambition and recognising how sport can affect your life, Academy departments - modern languages to PE, history and music - have got involved.

There have also been travel opportunities for pupils, with links to French, Dutch and German schools through the British Council Comenius programme.

Pupils hand-delivered an environmentally friendly Olympic torch designed by S5’s Shannon Taylor and Jo Leslie to their counterparts in Ozoir-la-Ferriere during a visit at the end of November.

The next overseas leg of the project will be in May with a visit to Amsterdam, a pancake house and motor racing on the itinerary plus producing an illustrated Olympics guide.

All top international events depend on great organisation and back on home turf a pupil Olympic committee led by Emily McKay (S5) has been focussed on publicity, fundraising, event management and the project website.

Pupils Brigitta Vago (S4) and Anna Zaczek (S3) (left) were the winners of an Olympic logo design competition to represent Scotland.

Their artistic efforts were then merged with those of the other countries to produce one shared logo.

The project’s climax will be the hosting of international guests at the Academy in May 2012, for sporting events and a mathletics challenge, complete with opening ceremony and specially-created song.

Modern languages teacher Laura Maden said the pupils were enjoying the project with the chance to travel abroad creating a buzz..
