Petition plea

THE threat of closure hanging over Kinneil Museum has persuaded a Bo'ness schoolboy to take action.

Callum Timms of Chestnut Grove organised a petition urging Falkirk Council not to close the museum and, almost overnight, he gathered 160 signatures.

And on Tuesday, at the Journal and Gazette's invitation, Councillor Robert Spears, environment and heritage convener at Falkirk Council, met Callum (9) and his parents, Mechelle and Tommy, and accepted the petition which he promised to deliver to the museum department bosses.

Councillor Spears urged Bo'ness residents to ensure that their voice was heard, whatever their views, during the consultation process which will shape Falkirk Council's eventual decision on the museum's future.

He said: "I can assure everyone that the consultation process is genuine and that we will be listening to what people are saying. No decision has been made.

"We want to see people of all ages engaged in the consultation and I'm delighted to accept Callum's petition."

Callum said: "There isn't much for children to do at Kinneil Estate apart from the museum, which I think is great. I don't want it to close."

Mum Mechelle said: "The petition was all Callum's idea. He's across at the estate regularly and his dad and I agree that more needs to be done to improve Kinneil Estate for visitors. It doesn't even have a picnic table!"

Bo'ness area forum met last night (Thursday) in Kinneil Primary School and, although it was not on the agenda, Kinneil Museum was expected to be raised.

Councillor Spears and Lesley O'Hare, Falkirk's

cultural services manager, were expected to attended.

The museum is under threat because Falkirk Council is considering plans to move some of the artefacts into a refurbished Hippodrome.

But Historic Scotland wants World Heritage Status for the Antonine Wall and, if that is successful, the 17th century C-listed museum would be pivotal to showcasing the area's Roman heritage.
