A £36,000 funding bid to get the ball rolling for the £145,000 Bo’ness tennis courts revamp has been made to Falkirk Environment Trust.

Bridgeness and Carriden Miners Welfare Club’s application under the landfill communities scheme will be considered at a board of directors meeting on March 19.

They would have the option of recommending the project to a landfill operator and, if viewed favourably, it could ultimately be registered by next month.

Jennifer Leonard, secretary of the welfare club’s tennis section, said the application had been made after a ‘positive meeting’ with the environmental trust.

A required 10 per cent third party contribution had now been confirmed by Tennis Scotland, she added.

Planning permission for the Harbour Road proposals was given by Falkirk Council in January.

Jennifer said: “The £36,000 is the cost of undertaking the building works on the retaining walls and steps at the tennis courts, as well as tree maintenance.

“These are the basic groundworks required before proceeding to reinstate the tennis court foundations and surface.

“This is the first step of funding for the project which will hopefully then enable us to finalise our applications to SportScotland and the Lawn Tennis Association for the remaining works in order to meet the total estimated costs of £145,000.”

Work would only start once all pieces of the funding jigsaw are in place.

“If all goes well we would hope to be on site in the summer, then hopefully be operational by late autumn,” she said.

Jennifer called on anyone who would like to play tennis at the Bo’ness courts in the future or be involved with the tennis section to email bonesstennisclub@hotmail.co.uk or like Bo’ness Tennis Club on Facebook.
