A West Lothian diabetes support group has swept the tables and scooped three top awards at a Scottish conference.

The Diabetes UK West Lothian volunteers were presented with awards in recognition of the work they do for people living with diabetes in West Lothian.

This year the organisation was also Tesco’s charity of the year and May Millward, chairwoman of the West Lothian group, won Tesco Team Leader of the Year.

May received this particular award for her work in supporting fundraising in the Bathgate, Linlithgow and South Queensferry stores.

Elizabeth Middleton won the Tesco Volunteer of the Year for fundraising with her family in the Bathgate store.

And Shona Murray won the Young People’s Award for her work, serving as a committee member of the West Lothian group along with other activities such as a sponsored parachute jump.

Mrs Millward, who was a recipient of the MBE in this year’s New Year Honours list, said: “I am delighted that out of 35 voluntary groups in Scotland, West Lothian has won three of the nine Inspire Awards.”

Jane-Claire Judson, National Director of Diabetes UK Scotland, said: “The Diabetes UK Scotland Inspire Awards are an annual event designed to recognise excellence in volunteering.

“It is an opportunity to thank people for the fantastic efforts they put in, as well as the activities they undertake on behalf of Diabetes UK Scotland and those living with the illness.”

The groups latest fundraising initiative is to swim the equivalent breadth of the English Channel.

May said: “We have three months between February 22 and May 22 to swim the 22 miles, or 35,000 metres.”

Donations can be made to the West Lothian volunteers on the Justgiving page at http://www.justgiving.com/WestLothianDiabetes UKGroup or make a donation by texting WLDU53 and the amount you would like to donate to 70070.
