A Highland games event with a difference took place last week at Linlithgow Academy playing fields as all the competitors were primary five schoolchildren.

The event was being held as part of the week-long Linlithgow Schools cluster games.

Pupils from Linlithgow Academy, Linlithgow Pri-mary, Linlithgow Bridge, Westfield, Low Port, Bridgend, Winchburgh, St Joseph’s, Springfield, Torphichen and Donaldson’s School were invited to take part in a huge variety of sport including the Highland games.

Lesley Malone, West Lothian’s schools PE organiser, who was one of the driving forces behind the event, said: “What an amazing day it was - one to be remembered for a very long time. It was hard work but, to be honest, very enjoyable.

“I’m so proud of the rest of my PE team, as well as all the teachers and other staff who have come together to ensure that the games went off without a hitch.

“I am retiring this year but this spectacular event will most certainly be the high point of my career, and one to be fondly remembered.”

The closing ceremony for the games took place on Monday, June 2, with a picnic on the Peel. Full report to follow.
