Anne Ewing, road racing competitor, 2014 Commonwealth Games

A cycling road racer from Torphichen is one of our best local opportunities at taking a medal home from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Doctor Anne Ewing will be contesting the cycle road race on Sunday,
August 3, which starts at Glasgow Green and features a 14km circuit around the city centre streets.

Female riders will have to complete a gruelling 98km over seven laps.

Anne started cycling in 2008/9 following the British Cycling ‘Girls for Gold’ talent identification programme, joining the Scottish elite athlete programme in May 2009.

She started racing internationally in 2010 in the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

However during the following two years saw little time to practise her sport outside a hospital while she completed her two-year foundation programme as a junior doctor.

Anne’s personal best thus far was a top 20 finish in the British Road Race Nationals 2009. She represented Scotland in the European Stage Races, 2010 and 2011, and then represented Scotland in the road race at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi 2010.

We wish Anne every luck success for a medal-winning outcome, although training and qualifying as a doctor while starting a cycling career means she probably doesn’t need to rely on the luck element!
