Volunteers help deliver the Penny Gospel in South Queensferry

The forthcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games has presented a unique opportunity for churches to do something simple but significant in their local community.

The Penny Gospel is a special edition of Luke’s Gospel with inspiring stories of sporting men and women who believe their faith is worth “More Than Gold.”

The Scottish Bible Society secured funding and donations to allow the gospels to be sold to churches at 1p in the hope that they will share the story of Jesus with thousands of people across Scotland in the run up to the Games.

In Queensferry, the congregations at Queensferry Parish Church, The Priory, St Margaret’s and Dalmeny have joined together to distribute 4000 of the Penny Gospels to every home in Queensferry and Dalmeny but also to work together during the coming months to offer opportunities for the community.

Inside will be a leaflet outlining planned local events, including a holiday club at the end of July for children and the autumn will see the churches working together in a joint Alpha Course and a ‘messy church’ experience.

These events will be held in venues around the town, and everyone is welcome especially non-church members.

Wendy Auld, a member of the mission and discipleship team at Queensferry Parish Church said: ‘‘This is quite an exciting venture. We are looking to approach people who would not normally go to church by coming to events
that are outwith the confines of the church, such as in local halls. We are also looking for volunteers to help distribute the gospels around the town.’’
