I came out the cinema on Thursday night after watching the moving civil rights documentary style movie The Butler to the news that Nelson Mandela had died.
The timing of that, just minutes after watching the film, was poignant.
He’s a man who defined a generation.
Apartheid, against a backdrop of politics in sport, defined my teenage years and an awakening interest in news.
And Mandela, whatever the opposing views were on his youth and his time in prison, became such a powerful force for good. He was the figurehead of a country desperate for change, a force for peace and for love, and for working together that influenced a new generation of politicians and the future of his country and beyond.
