ST MICHAEL’S Day Care Centre staff were left reeling after ‘‘despicable’’ thieves stole OAPs’ lunch money and cancelled their 25th anniversary plans.

The window in the centre’s disabled toilet was smashed with glass strewn everywhere, and the £150 till float and copper donations from local pubs amounting to £58 were stolen. Manager Karen Wright was devastated they couldn’t open until Wednesday as it would massively disrupt a lot of the client’s lives after the two-week Christmas break.

She said: “We couldn’t open until Wednesday as we had to wait for the police scenes of crime team to inspect the damage. The cleaner had a shock when she came in on Monday morning as at first she thought it was wind damage, and then she didn’t know if whoever it was was still in the building or not.”

Although the cash amount stolen was not large, the money taken belonged directly to centre users.
