A traditional stone cottage in Strawberry Bank surrounded by its solid stone wall and wrought iron railings could easily evoke visions of gentler times.
With views towards the 15th century church, St Michaels, you can see why this compact property in a conservation area was much loved by its owners Gillian and John Wylie.
Gillian said: “It has been our family home for 30 years. We raised our three children here and love the location.”
Sitting barely a stone’s throw from the town’s historic palace, No. 8 will delight those wishing to stay in a home with character and a rustic feel yet nestling within the town of Linlithgow.
Compact and easily managed, the cottage nevertheless offers great accommodation with two double bedrooms and an attic room which makes it ideal for family living.
Sash windows in the generously sized lounge enhance the period look and style of the house, giving that extra emphasis of originality.
“The house was actually called Strawberry Cottage and was originally a dairy so it is a house with an interesting past,” explained Gillian.
“It has a quirky charm with its split levels and abundance of light.
“Close your eyes and you can still hear the sound of the horse-drawn milk cart trundling down the street.
“It’s odd to think of the history which this cottage has seen over the years and, in it’s earlier days, a completely different lifestyle.”
A mature garden at the rear of the house gives added punch to the countryside feel, with trees, bushes and plants giving a sense of privacy and even seclusion.
The boxroom also gives that extra bit of accommodation a young family would find useful and the two garden sheds perhaps provide the opportunity to convert into that longed for summer outhouse where the plentiful bird life would be a tuneful companion to some peaceful reading and down-time relaxation.
Languid summer months could be spent cooking up delicious al-fresco food in the separate barbeque area.
“Squirrels and ducks from the canal also frequent the garden, it’s a real wildlife haven”, added Gillian.
This is a home that could appeal to families with children or to couples who look forward to seeing their family or friends who stop off for the weekend, sampling all the natural delights of the surrounding area.
“The outdoors and the nearby towpath are just perfect for walking my schnauzer as well,” added Gillian.
