A woman has died after fire ripped through her home in Torphichen on Tuesday night.

Fire crews from Bathgate and Linlithgow arrived at 11 Greenside around 7.30pm, but the 95-year-old named locally as Grace Burgess died at the scene.

Grace was the oldest person in Torphichen and was still an active member of the Nifty Fifties club.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police responded to a fire at a flat in Greenside, Torphichen, around 7.35pm on Tuesday. A 95-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a number of other residents were temporarily evacuated. There are no suspicious circumstances and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

A joint police and fire investigation will now take place to establish what caused the fire thought to be confined to the ground floor.
