Executive councillor for the environment Tom Conn said: “Many owners are not aware that many pet services such as, kennelling, boarding dogs in a home overnight, or boarding dogs in a home or business during the day, need a licence from West Lothian Council to operate. The licence will ensure that the business is providing the right standards of animal care and welfare. However professional dog walking doesn’t need a licence.”
A spokesperson for Environmental Health & Trading Standards added: “If you use unlicensed businesses they are unlikely to be insured if anything were to happen to your pet during their stay. They may also have little knowledge of animal care and welfare.”
