I have been attending the Linlithgow Players “ Plays and Wine “ for many years and thought that this year’s Sherlock Holmes extravaganza was one of the best yet.
I think AmDram is at its best when they do light and frivolous - but maybe that is just me.
In the first play I loved the word play in ‘Sherlock Holmes Last Case’, especially Watson’s line when Sherlock reveals the name of a suspect “Not Barrett - Holmes!’
In the second play ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, Judy Barker was outstanding, she has the ability to get into the character of whatever part she plays. In this play, I particularly enjoyed Sue Visard, who I have watched develop from a bit player into an actor who now vies with Judy Barker for star billing.
Her confidence and aplomb when dealing with a series of costume malfunctions at the beginning of The Hound of the Baskervilles (especially the loss of her moustache) was truly magnificent.
Some of the longer serving players did really well too. Ray Myers was impressive with his fast-paced dialogue with David Wotherspoon, and Eleanor Bain brought a lot of humour to her characters in the two plays she was in.
It was encouraging to see some of the newer members who I don’t recall from past shows performing so well.
All in all it was a most enjoyable evening and I look forward to future performances by a group who go from strength to strength.
