PO could be saved

early indications show that Torphichen Post Office and village shop will be back up and running within weeks.

There was a large turn-out at a public meeting in the Torphichen Inn on Tuesday as residents rallied to discuss community PO ownership. The shop, which serves around 600 villagers, was closed in early November, after the subpostmaster resigned.

In a report in last week’s Journal and Gazette, a Post Office Ltd spokesman said they had no other option but to close the shop but they were working hard to restore a presence in the village.

But it looks like fears the shop would not re-open have been allayed as local businesswoman Oonagh Shackleton, who owns Glendale Knitwear in Whitburn, hopes to buy the business.
