A BO’NESS student whose poem will be featured in a band’s new single, after winning a national competition, is crediting high-profile tweeter Stephen Fry for her success.

Stephanie Rose’s winning words from ‘This World’ will bang the drum for mental health in acoustic outfit Refuge’s CD, to be released on July 1.

She also gets an iPad and will travel to the House of Lords for a presentation with five other winners on May 1.

The marine biology student entered the Rethink Your Mind project after spotting a tweet about it by the famous actor and writer.

Stephanie has been penning poetry since she was a young girl but this is her biggest achievement to date.

‘This World’, which she wrote especially for the competition, was selected by a star-studded judging pane of acclaimed poets.

As part of Stephanie’s prize, it will be published on the www.rethinkyourmind.co.uk website and in a hardback book, aimed at providing a valuable mental health help guide.

She said: “I was so surprised to get the call to say I’d won. It didn’t hit me until I hung up and then I got really excited.

“I can’t describe how special it will be to have my words sung.”

Rethink Your Mind was the brainchild of Refuge lead singer Peter Hirst, development worker at Safe Inside, Safe Outside, who launched the project with Citizens’ Eye.

It gives mental health groups and NHS Trusts a free platform and Peter hopes it will get people talking positively about mental health.

Final year Stirling University student Stephanie (21), who lives with parents Susan and David is all for that. She said: “There are so many stigmas still attached to mental illness and there shouldn’t be. It’s just another kind of health problem.”

Peter Hirst commented: “We have been inspired by the submitted wonderful words and artwork and can’t wait to sing Stephanie’s wonderfully uplifting words.”

* This World

This world that we share is

full of wondrous things

And each day is a gift

Enjoy the chances that it brings.

Listen to the music

Of an exultant bird

Or get lost in the wonder

Of the written word.

Dwelling on the bad

an unhealthy way to go

we might miss the good

So many joys we won’t know.

Chorus:

Learn to enjoy the simple things

For they are all around, around, around they’re all around

And when we can see the positives in all these things

Happiness will always be found.

Appreciate the scent

Of a dew covered flower

Or sharing your friendship

In someone’s most needing hour;

Listen to the music

Of an exultant bird

Or get lost in the wonder

Of the written word.

Dwelling on the bad

an unhealthy way to go

we might miss the good

So many joys we won’t know.

Chorus:

Learn to enjoy the simple things

For they are all around, around, around they’re all around

And when we can see the positives in all these things

Happiness will always be found.
