POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman had her handbag snatched in Kirklison last Wednesday, December 14.

The incident happened around 7pm at The Square in the village.

Seventy-five year-old Nancy McCormack was on the steps of the Thomas Chalmers Parish Church Centre when a man pulled at her handbag, causing her to fall to the ground.

The elderly woman, who has a heart condition, was checked out at the scene and then went to hospital the next day, although she was not badly injured.

Ms McCormack’s son, Stuart, said the incident had left his mum shocked and shaken. He said her handbag was taken and all the contents such as money, bank card and keys were taken.

Mr McCormack added: ‘‘The fact that somebody could do that at this time of the year and in that location is despicable.”

Police say after the incident the man made off towards the cemetery but a member of the public assisted the victim and contacted police who later recovered the bag on Bowling Green Road.

Enquiries are now ongoing to trace the suspect and anyone who can help identify him is asked to come forward. The man is described as white, in his teens, wearing dark clothes and a hat.

A police spokesman said: “The elderly victim was not injured, but she was understandably shaken and we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area and witnessed the theft.

“Similarly, anyone with information that can assist with our investigation is also asked to contact police immediately.”

Anyone with any info can contact police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
