A one-month consultation process on declaring an air quality management area in Newton opened on Monday May 16.
Air quality in Newton has been assessed in detail and it has found that the levels of pollution are likely to exceed air quality objectives for particulate matter.
As such, West Lothian Council must now declare an air quality management area.
The next step will be carrying out a further assessment along with a draft action plan for full community consultation which will run until June 20.
A West Lothian Council spokesman said: “We hope that local people will take part in the consultation which is available online at www.westlothian.gov.uk/AQMAnewton.
‘‘It is also possible to email comments to: NewtonAirQuality@westlothian.gov.uk, alternatively, comments can be posted to West Lothian Council, Environmental Health, c/o West Lothian Civic Centre, Howden South Road, Livingston, West Lothian, EH54 6FF.”
