YOUNG visitors got a taste of Roman life at Kinneil Estate last Saturday, dressing up, marching with Antonine Guard soldiers and planning battle tactics!
The fun, which attracted visitors from a wide area, marked the first day of Roman Week which co-incides with the birthday of Emperor Antoninus Pius - the man who ordered the building of the Antonine Wall.
This fourth annual celebration, co-ordinated by Bo’net and the Friends of Kinneil with partners, was bolstered by over £9000 funding from the Lottery’s Awards for All scheme.
Friends chairwoman Maria Ford said the Roman encampment and other activities, like a free Italian lesson and film night, had gone down a treat. The kids’ helmets, swords and shields will now be at Kinneil Museum for future use.
Visit www.bigromanweek.org.uk to find out what’s in store until Sunday, September 23, including a premiere of ‘The Rockin’ History of Kinneil’ made by Public School pupils at the Hippodrome today (Saturday, September 22).
