The Journal and Gazette’s appeal to help babies and toddlers living in poverty and squalor in Romania has got off to a flying start.

We are looking to help local ‘superwoman’ Anne Wilkinson who is spearheading a campaign to bring desperately needed baby clothes, powdered milk and nappies to families in the rural areas of Romania.

Some of these families have nothing, living in run-down, shanty towns without electricity or running water.

Some of these families cannot afford to feed themselves and have to make the choice to starve themselves in order that babies and children get a daily meal.

In some cases, children cannot attend school because they may only have one set clothing - missing school also means missing a guarantee of a hot meal!

In other families, parents are trying to recycle nappies because they cannot afford to use more than one a day.

Ann, who has been raising funds, is hoping to fill a van with supplies and drive to Romania in September.

The appeal needs your help in achieving this.

Donations can be dropped off at the addresses shown in the panel below.

Anne this week updated us on how things have been progressing since we launched the appeal last week.

She said: “I am overwhelmed with the generosity of the public. Never in my wildest dreams could I ever have envisaged this appeal would have taken off like it has.

‘‘Some people have handed in 10 bags at a time, and we are at a point already, three weeks since the first article appeared where the van is almost full already. We may now have to consider, very seriously, trying to source another vehicle and driver if donations continue at the same pace.

“It’s at time like this that you realise how generous people can be with their support of a good cause.”
