West Lothian was in the royal eye recently when HRH the Duchess of Cornwall held a reception in Clarence House to raise awareness of Credit Unions.
Her Royal Highness extolled the virtues of the institutions that provide a “friendly financial community” for its members and can “bring in from the cold” those who struggle to qualify for traditional loans.
The President of West Lothian Credit Union, Nancy MacGillivray, was presented to the Duchess and raised the issues facing local people.
The Duchess is very enthusiastic about credit unions and at the reception she held, she encouraged everyone, irrespective of income, to join their local credit union.
During her speech, she said: “Credit unions serve people, not profit.
“I do believe that credit unions could be a real force for change in the financial landscape and are truly a cause worth supporting!”
Nancy MacGillivray, President of West Lothian Credit Union, said: “HRH The Duchess of Cornwall is a great ambassador for the movement. She saves with her local credit union in London, promoting savings directly through their salary to her own householdstaff.
“HRH encourages everyone to become a member of their local credit union and benefit from a friendly, local and reliable service.
“Everyone who lives or works within West Lothian can join West Lothian Credit Union and access the same advantages as the Duchess of Cornwall.”
The West Lothian branchof the credit union movement is a not-for-profit financial cooperative that provides an effective and viable alternative to profit making financial institutions, and also provides a safe place to save money and access affordable loans.
